Russell Ochocki, one of the founders of Provincial Tel had an idea in 2005.
It started with an idea

2005

In 2005, our co-founder Russell Ochocki who owned a dial-up internet company saw that the life of dial-up would soon end. Customers now wanted faster connection speeds. Smaller companies like his were unable to compete with the larger telecommunication companies. As well, these large companies now offered internet services bundled with their telephony services. Seeing what was to come, Russell began to explore new, more innovative ways to provide an alternative to these companies. Russell discovered how to convert an ISP into a telecommunication services company through discussions with like-minded people. After lengthy discussions between co-founders regarding this new innovative phone company’s mission, Provincial Tel was born. Provincial Tel would not provide canned phone solutions but rather customize the solution based on each customer’s needs.

Provincial Tel became a CRTC certified full-service telecommunications provider (Public Switched Telephone Network  or PSTN) in November 2009. It was a long and challenging journey to become Manitoba’s third phone option, having to jump over the many hurdles and through many hoops. We quickly began building our phone network to serve 160 communities in Manitoba and 1000+ communities across Canada.

Between 2014 and 2016, we added Direct Inward Dialing (DID) or Virtual Phone Numbers to our product offerings. DIDs allow you to have a local area code and phone number in one of the 75+ countries we have partnered with. Furthermore, you can have a phone number in over 10,000 exchanges across Canada and the United States. Consequently, any calls made or received with your virtual number will be charged as local calls.

Provincial Tel became a certified Toll-Free carrier with interconnections to other carriers in Canada, the US and 23 Caribbean nations – a significant achievement for a Manitoba-based entity.
